When it comes to planning your engagement session or proposal, the Bay Area is full of stunning backdrops that don’t need much help to look incredible. Whether you’re drawn to ocean views, quiet parks, or something a little more iconic, there’s a place here for every kind of love story.

I’ve photographed couples all across Northern California, and these are my favorite Bay Area engagement and proposal locations that offer beautiful light, natural variety, and plenty of space to just be yourselves.

1. TREASURE ISLAND

If you want skyline views without the crowds, Treasure Island is one of my favorite hidden gems. It’s close to the city but feels peaceful, with wide open skies and the perfect angle for that golden hour glow over San Francisco. I love shooting proposals here because you can see the Bay Bridge and city lights sparkle in the background as the sun sets.

2. GOLDEN GATE OVERLOOK

This spot is classic San Francisco without feeling overdone. The Golden Gate Overlook gives you that postcard view of the bridge framed by tall cypress trees. It’s quiet, tucked away, and full of soft, romantic light in the evening. It’s ideal for couples who want a relaxed, timeless vibe.

3. SUTRO BATHS

Sutro Baths offers a little bit of everything: cliffs, ocean waves, and dramatic ruins that make every photo feel cinematic. It’s best at sunset when the sky turns gold and the tide starts to rise. If you love moody, wind-in-your-hair photos, this is your spot.

4. LYON STREET STEPS (MY SECRET LOCATION)

This one is a bit of a secret. The Lyon Street Steps are tucked between elegant homes with a beautiful view of the Palace of Fine Arts in the distance. It’s elegant and quiet, perfect for couples who want an editorial feel without heavy crowds. I keep this one close because it’s too good to be overrun.

5. BAKER BEACH

You can’t go wrong with Baker Beach. It’s one of the most iconic spots for proposals and engagement sessions in San Francisco. Between the crashing waves and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, it’s easy to see why. My favorite moments happen when couples kick off their shoes and just walk along the shore together.

6. LAKE CHABOT

If you’re more drawn to greenery and calm water than city views, Lake Chabot in Castro Valley is a peaceful option. The light reflecting off the lake at sunset is beautiful, and the trails offer a natural setting that feels secluded and romantic.

7. LEGION OF HONOR

For couples who love architecture, The Legion of Honor is a dream. The columns, neutral tones, and open courtyard create a clean, timeless look that photographs beautifully. It’s great for editorial-inspired sessions or anyone who wants an elegant setting with plenty of light.

8. ADOBE ALVISO PARK

Adobe Alviso Park is a quiet gem in the South Bay with rolling hills and oak trees that glow at sunset. It’s ideal for couples who want a relaxed, nature-filled setting without having to travel too far from the city.

9. CASTELLO DI AMOROSA

For something completely different, Castello di Amorosa in Napa Valley feels like stepping into another world. The Tuscan-inspired castle, vineyards, and stone walls create a romantic, destination feel without leaving California. Perfect for couples who want a more formal or dressed-up session.

10. VASONA PARK

Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos is another versatile spot. There are open fields, willow trees, and plenty of water views, all in one location. It’s a great place to capture that soft, golden light and candid moments in nature.

11. SYCAMORE GROVE PARK

Located in Livermore, Sycamore Grove Park has those long stretches of trees and trails that photograph beautifully year-round. It’s especially stunning in late summer and fall when the light gets warm and the grass turns golden.

12. HIPPIE TREE, TIBURON

If you’re up for a bit of a short hike, the Hippie Tree in Tiburon offers one of the best panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline. It’s whimsical, relaxed, and perfect for couples who want their session to feel adventurous and free.

CHOOSING YOUR PERFECT BAY AREA LOCATION

The best location is the one that feels like you. Think about what you love doing together: walking on the beach, hiking, exploring city streets, and start there. The goal is not to perform or pose, but to create space for real moments to happen naturally.
